Ynysygerwn CC Celebrate 170 Years Of Cricket
Ynysygerwn CC will be celebrating 170 years since cricket was introduced into the village by local landowner Sir John Llewellyn. In 1847 Sir John Llewellyn formed Ynysygerwn Cricket Club and the club will celebrate from Sunday 25th June to Sunday 2nd July when they hold a week full of cricket.
Ynysygerwn, who now play in the South Wales Premier Division One, will host cricket everyday for a week that includes league and cup fixtures as well as numerous friendly games. The highlight of the week takes place on Thursday 29th June when club chairman Gwyn Richards XI will face off against a Richard Grant's Captains XI in a 45 over affair.
The club are also delighted to announce that on Tuesday 27th June the South Wales Cricket Association will take on an Ynysygerwn XI in a 40 over game at the club.
Ynysygerwn is a small picturesque village in the Neath Valley, but despite only having a small population the club has had the privilege of playing at Lord's twice in it's history. Although both village cup finals in 1979 and 1985 ended in defeats they are still talked about regularly at the club.
Ynysygerwn has steadily rose through what was the South wales and Monmouthshire League, now known as the South Wales Cricket Association until in 1973 promotion was gained to the 1st Division, and this is where the club stayed until 2009 when the club entered the newly formed South Wales Premier Cricket League.
During this time the club has had the honour of lifting the Dan Radcliffe First Division on seven occasions. The Welsh Cricket Cup five time as well as the South Wales Cricket Association Knockout cup once, The latest honour was in 2015 when the club lifted the South Wales Premier League T20 competition at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.
Over the years Ynysygerwn Cricket Club has held Glamorgan 2nd XI games, Wales Minor County games, SWCA representative games as well as hosting many touring sides from Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies and South Africa, possibly the most notable visitors being Soweto Cricket team , which played at Ynysygerwn in 1995.
Ynysygerwn also tour the Far East and Australia in 1991, some photos can be found on the website through the history page.
We would like to welcome all visitors to join us during our cricket week to celebrate a fantastic achievement and we look forward to more years of cricket at Ynysygerwn.
